Budgeting was the key thing for survival because they couldn't go around wasting money on expensive dinners or cab rides. By budgeting they were able to make it through the 30 days. When they were with the kids Morgan bought some bread but Alex was upset about him buying it because he is wasting their money, he wasn't budgeting properly. They needed to budget carefully together so they can stay together and not get into fights like that.

Evan Z 30 Days on Minimum Wage p7
Morgan and Alex are very good at budgeting through the 30 days because they made it through the 30 days on minimum wage. They were very good at prioritizing things like payments and food. They went to places to get free food and free furniture so they could use their money on other more important things. They would have made the budget if they didn't have the medical issue because that is very expensive.

I agree with this, budgeting is the key to survival when dealing with a salary of minimum wage. And I also agree that the only way this will work with multiple people is if they all agree on necessities vs. desires.
